Lake Auronzo
After almost 2 hours passing through enchanting mountain villages, we will stop for 30 minutes to walk along the crystal-clear waters of Lake Auronzo, embraced by the Marmarole range and welcoming us to the Dolomites. Created in the 1930s for hydroelectric purposes, the lake symbolizes progress and resilience, holding strategic importance during World War II. Despite being artificial, it hosts a unique ecosystem maintained by rare microorganisms and algae, showcasing nature’s adaptability.
Lake Misurina
Our second stop, after a 30-minute drive, is Lake Misurina, nestled in the heart of the Dolomites. This natural alpine lake is renowned for its clean air, known for benefiting those with respiratory issues. You can enjoy a stroll around its shores or savor an optional lunch in one of the charming huts or restaurants, sampling traditional mountain dishes while admiring the majestic peaks. The pristine, oxygen-rich waters provide the perfect habitat for this unique fish. Take a moment to enjoy the tranquil charm of this special destination.
Lake Braies
In the fourth stage of our journey, after a 20-minute drive, we reach Lake Braies, near the Austrian border. Renowned as one of the most photographed lakes in Italy, its emerald waters are surrounded by the stunning peaks of the Dolomites. Known as the 'Pearl of the Dolomites' for its breathtaking beauty, Lake Braies also holds historical significance as the site where, in May 1945, prominent hostages held by the Nazis were freed through negotiations with the Allies. The lake's clear blue-green waters, dense forests, and flowery meadows create a unique blend of natural beauty and history, making it a must-see destination in South Tyrol.
Cortina d’Ampezzo
Our final stop is Cortina d’Ampezzo, an enchanting town surrounded by the Dolomites. With Roman origins and part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until World War I, it was annexed to Italy in 1919 with the Treaty of Saint-Germain. It hosted the Winter Olympics in 1956 and will do so again in 2026, enhancing its reputation. The town retains Ladin, Italian, and Germanic influences in its traditions and the language still spoken.
